Responsible Divination

What exactly is divination?  As I explained in my article “Wicca & Divination,” it is defined as “the practice of seeing knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means.”  Divination can involve the use of tools such as the Tarot, or through the use of a clair ability (i.e. clairvoyance, clairaudience, claircognizance, etc.), either yours or a professional intuitive’s.  In this article, I’ll talk about using the art of divination in your daily life, and how to do so most effectively & responsibly.

Using Divination in Everyday Life

Wanting to know what the future holds is a curiosity that is innate in most people.  By knowing what’s in store, we’re able to more effectively plan our lives.  “Will I get that promotion at work?” “Does he/she have romantic feelings for me?” “How can I earn more money?”  These are all common questions asked during divinatory processes.

Divination is most effective, however, when you frame the questions/scenarios in a way that allows your Spirit Guides to provide a roadmap for getting what you desire.  For example, instead of asking if you’re going to get the promotion at work, try asking what you can do in order to showcase your talents and worth to the decision makers.  Instead of asking if you’ll find true love this year, ask what you can do to align yourself with a path that will lead you to finding the right mate.

Avoiding Divination Overload

While divination can be an extremely useful aid, it is possible to overuse it.  People can become “psychic junkies” and use the divination arts of psychics and intuitives to a degree that they’re looking for divine guidance on every little thing in their lives.  Doing a Tarot reading to find out if you should go out to dinner with your friends or if you should stay home and watch movies is not exactly an efficient use of divination.  Your Spirit Guides love to help you – it’s kind of their job – but when it comes to the mundane, day-to-day stuff, it’s better to just use another divine mechanism… your common sense.

Another pitfall to avoid is asking the same question over and over.  This is a bit of a nuanced situation, however.  On one hand, it’s perfectly acceptable to check-in with your Guides every few months regarding an ongoing situation to get a fresh perspective and up-to-date guidance. On the other hand, if you consult a psychic or have a Tarot reading done one day for a situation, then turn around and ask the same thing three days later, and then again a week after that, you’re not doing yourself any favors.  Your Guides will provide guidance as best they can – but it’s important to allow time for things to play out and for the Universe to take its course.  Moreover, in any effective psychic reading or divination session, you’re bound to get “action items” from your Guides – steps you should take in order to get the results you desire.  If you ask the same question within a few days’ time, you’re not allowing sufficient time to do the things you need to do, nor are you allowing the Universe to do what it needs to do.

Divination Red Flags

Unfortunately, there are a lot of unethical people who practice divination.  Here are just a few things you should be cognizant of when looking for a psychic, Tarot reader, or medium.

Psychics who say you’re cursed.  More specifically, any psychic who says you’re cursed and you have to pay them in order to have the curse or hex removed.  As I mention in this article about curses, they aren’t the life-threatening thing that Hollywood makes it seem like.  Simply put, curses hold only as much power as you allow them to hold.  A curse is simply negative energy directed at a person or persons.  You don’t need a psychic or a witch to “remove a hex” from you; you can counter the energy on your own.  Anyone trying to solicit money from you to remove a curse or a hex is a charlatan and is simply trying to take your money.

Psychics who say something’s “definitely” going to happen.  The only things that are certain are death and taxes.  Our futures are not set in stone, and we have the free will to change any aspect of our lives if we choose to do so.  If a psychic tells you something is “definitely” going to happen, whether that thing is good or bad, take that prediction with a grain of salt.  While there are ways for intuitive professionals to tap into higher powers to determine if a certain event or course is likely to happen, no one can say with 100% certainty that something is definitely going to happen.  So if the event or thing you’re inquiring about is a good thing you want to happen, then take steps to manifest that thing in your life.  If it’s something bad, then take steps to ensure the thing doesn’t come about.  Don’t trust anyone who predicts in absolutes.

Psychics who say they (or you) can make someone fall in love with you.  We all have free will, including people you have a romantic interest in.  If a psychic tells you that they can make your romantic interest fall in love with you, steer clear of that psychic!  This is a highly unethical practice that involves subverting someone’s free will, and it ALWAYS comes with a whole host of unintended negative consequences.  I speak about this in more detail in my blog about the dangers of love spells.  So if a psychic tells you that they can make the person you’re interested in fall in love with you (no doubt for an extra fee), don’t do it.  I can assure you that you’re not prepared for the consequences that come along with that.

Divination is a great tool and, when used properly, can enhance and enrich our lives in many ways.  But, like anything else, it can be overused and misused.  So next time you’re seeking out a Tarot reading or psychic session, keep the points covered here in mind.
